In Cambodia bank credit is basically limited to the cities, but many institutions offer microcredit: ACLEDA, AMRET etc. They have become very large institutions and use methods which are not suitable for the very poor.
In Svay Riêng small NGOs provide microcredit in kind: pigs or cows. They have become careful because of massive failures in the past. When the loan is in the form of a cow, it is reimbursed with a calf. The reimbursement is often the condition for other group members in the village to borrow as well, so the cow is watched and "well protected".
